As owners of a large Class A motorhome, we flat tow a Honda CR-V behind our rig and have done so for nearly two decades now. We bought it brand new in … specifically to tow behind us when we became full-time RVers. Our little CR-V has handled all of our adventures with ease. Because of all of these factors comfort, practicality, reliability, and durability , lots of RVers choose to flat tow a Honda CR-V behind their motorhomes.

But how do we tow our Honda CR-V? Are there options? Can we tow it with all four wheels on the ground? Are there restrictions when you flat tow a Honda CR-V? The answer to this question is an emphatic YES… with one important caveat. It depends on the model and model year.

Unfortunately, due to drivetrain changes, only Honda CR-Vs before the model year are flat-towable as in and older. So, if you can buy a Honda CR-V that is a pre model, you will be able to flat tow it. Newer models cannot be flat-towed. Although Honda does not specifically approve every CR-V model for flat towing behind a motorhome, the CR-V drivetrain seems to be generally strong enough to withstand being towed.

Manufacturer recommended procedures enable the Honda CR-V to be flat towed safely without sustaining damage. Safety is key to keeping a reliable vehicle in tow while you venture via motorhome. Many older models are manufacturer approved, but newer models such as the CR-V are not. It is possible that due to concerns regarding liability, warranty coverage, or the expense of strenuously testing each model Honda does not approve each vehicle model.

Honda will provide flat towing instructions per request for CR-V models. Vehicles should be not be towed by their drive wheels. For example, the standard CR-V has front-wheel-drive and should be towed by the rear wheels.

If your CR-V is equipped with an AWD system, to avoid transmission damage it should be flat towed with all four wheels on the ground. All-wheel-drive vehicles should only be flat towed if the vehicle has neutral N position on the transfer case. Without the neutral N position, flat towing of AWD vehicles can result in damage to the transmission. Modifications are necessary to flat tow AWD vehicles that do not have neutral N position. Check that the manual transmission fluid level is full, but not exceeding the fill line.

To prepare for towing, start the engine and press the brake, shift the transmission through all the gears one at a time, then shift to drive and finally into neutral. Let the engine run for three minutes and shut off. Turn the ignition switch to the accessory position so the steering wheel does not lock and leave the key in and make sure the parking brake is released. Turn the radio and any accessories off so You dont drain the battery.
