What is the difference between methodology and framework

Method is a like a particular solution or an approach to do something, which is more or less systematic. Basically, method is a way of accomplishing something in a structured, systematic way. This brings to our main question — what is methodology? So, methodology is strongly linked to the desired outcome of a field of study. It is a way to systematically solve a problem. Methodology refers to a set of processes, tools or practices to accomplish something.

In programming terms, methodology refers to the analysis and implementation of programs. The top programming methodologies include Scrum, Agile, Kanban, and so on. A framework is a structured approach to a problem.

In many ways, it helps focus your attention on certain aspects of a problem. In the programming world, a framework is a platform upon which software applications are built. A software framework is a reusable design platform or a part of a program for software system or subsystems. A framework is something programmers can use for, extend or customize for particular computing solutions. Basically, it is a collection of reusable components which means developers do not have to start from scratch each time they write an application or write a code.

A framework provides solutions to different types of problem domain, which includes domain frameworks, application frameworks, and support frameworks.

So theoretically, a framework is more flexible than a methodology and provides ample room for creativity. Methodology is a way to systematically solve a problem.

A framework, on the other hand, is a structured approach to a problem that is needed to implement a model or at least, part of a model. A framework is a skeletal structure around which something can be built. It defines the processes used to build software applications and to make sure the whole software development runs smoothly and systematically.

A software framework, on the other hand, is a platform upon which software applications are built. A method is a particular approach or solution to do something. Methods achieve their goals using systematic rules. On the other hand, methodology refers to a set of tools, processes, or practices used to accomplish something.

This makes methodology the study of methods. In programming, methodology denotes the analysis and implementation of programs. Methodologies have defined approaches on the steps to be taken, why the steps are essential, and how they should accomplish each stage.

Frameworks have a structured approach to solving problems. Frameworks help project managers focus their attention on particular aspects of a problem. The framework has an overview of how project managers and their teams should implement project guidelines. Frameworks give the person in charge of the project enough room to find the best way to complete the project. This includes bringing in new and existing practices and methods to the framework they are working with.

Frameworks are commonly used to customize, modify or extend a particular project. This is achieved by re-using components, meaning that project managers do not have to start each time afresh.

Definition- Methodologies define the way to systematically solve or complete a project, while a framework is just a skeletal structure on which projects are built. Mode of Operation- Methodology systematically solves a problem by combining two things together; the preferred methods and the logic behind your chosen methods. The Treasury Enterprise Architecture Framework defines a methodology as:.

A documented approach for performing activities in a coherent, consistent, accountable, and repeatable manner. As the name signifies, a method is more of a particular solution or approach to achieve something. A method is, more or less, systematic. In abstract terms, a methodology is a concept that needs to be defined, systematic, and structured to particular client situations. Put differently, a method is a way of accomplishing something in a structured, systematic way. A methodology strongly links to the desired client outcome.

A methodology not only describes the steps that you need to follow to achieve a desired outcome, but also the logic behind those steps. The definition of methodology in Oxford dictionary is:. According to the Cambridge dictionary, a methodology is:. The term, methodology, is made of two parts, namely — Method and ology. Any word ends with ology means a subject of study or; a branch of knowledge.

Therefore, by knowing the meaning of method we can easily understand term methodology. A methodology is a way to systematically solve a problem. On the other hand, a framework is a structured approach to problem solving. Frameworks provide the structural components you need to implement a model.

It is a skeletal structure around which something can be built. A framework is a collection of reusable components that offer a consultant shortcuts to avoid developing a structure from scratch, each time they start an engagement. Some frameworks take a more rigid approach to consulting, while others are more lenient throughout the engagement lifecycle.

Methodology, on the other hand, has its limitations in terms of creativity because it is based on a set of pre-defined rules.
